9 Tips For Crafting A Successful College Essay

9 Tips For Crafting A Successful College Essay We learn that the author knows how to turn a phrase, the author is a warm and caring person, the author has a sense of humor, and the author will bring us cookies if we admit her to our imaginary college. All in all, we see a student who is a skilled writer with a warm heart â€" positive traits, to be sure. This essay is an example of how to tell the story of moving to America in a unique way. “The essay really needs to be the student’s work. I encourage students to ask people close to them to read the essay and ask ‘would you know this essay is about me? But make sure it’s still your voice,” Richardson says. While St. Johns College may ask for more in-depth answers, other schools value brevity, challenging students to write concisely. Reading the school’s website is not a bad start, as it will give you a basic overview of what’s on offer. Keep an eye peeled for course listings, recent news events, maps and descriptions of important campus buildings, student run organizations, and other key terms. Then take those terms and plug them right into Google, Youtube and Linkedin! After reading links on the things that interest you, you’ll understand it almost as well as someone at the school! Statistical websites like College Factual are tremendously helpful here as well, as are blogs from current and former students, Vlogs, Instagram feeds â€" anything and everything is fair game. Still another essay I had a student complaining about how she didn’t like traditional school so switched to homeschooling. But here, wouldn’t colleges wonder whether she could handle “traditional” college? To be clear, a “wow essay” is not the same as a “wow factor.” But they are related. A “wow factor” is an activity or accomplishment that you achieve before sitting down to type that first draft. Cite a wide range of sources in your essay to show the depth of your research. Inzer also encourages students not to stress too much over the essay and put unnecessary weight on it as part of their college application. While a strong essay may elevate a candidate in a crowded field, she says it doesn’t make or break an application. The Great College Essay Project combines the existing free college writing support that’s been provided by 826 National’s chapters since 2002 with Reach Higher’s expertise in creating a college-going movement. Through the project, students from underserved communities can access free, individualized essay coaching and feedback through dedicated workshops at 826’s nine chapters and four other cities nationwide. Hiring an essay coach to help craft college essays is common in many well-off communities â€" it’s not unusual for a coach to charge $1,000 or more for their services. A “wow essay” is a piece of writing that arrests the reader with its ideas and narrative. Often the material for a “wow essay” comes from a “wow factor.” Still, you can write an amazingly engaging essay, even if your activities don’t place you among the modern gods of extracurriculars. Additionally, incredible “wow factors” can sometimes lead to unexpected admissions . But with a wow essay, you’re likely just getting in to Harvard when your grades/scores/activities are on par. But the same is true for college essays, as Orwell doubtlessly would have realized if he were reanimated and handed him a sheaf of Common Applications. The sad truth is that most college application essays are not very good. When I say they are “not very good”, I mean they are either boring, impenetrable, melodramatic, or all of the above. But every student, regardless of their zip code or the amount of cash in their parent/guardian’s bank account, should have access to a trusted adult who can provide essay help. This essay doesn’t share many life-defining revelations; we learn, as a brief aside, that the author often cared for her younger siblings, but little beyond that. Yet despite its relative lack of major information, it reveals a lot about who the author is. One such example, shared by Tufts, takes the reader from the student’s love of origami to a passion for science in less than 250 words. “You can think of the essay as the soul of the application. If you are applying to 8-10 schools, and will thus be composing 8-10 of these essays, your inclination to take shortcuts is completely understandable. Just make sure that these timesavers don’t turn into admissions-killers.

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. I don’t necessarily have to find validity in everyone’s viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. “These people are just confused,” Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, “Let people be who they are.” Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. Continuing with the recipe, I gradually add water to the masa harina and knead it until it becomes the desired texture. Assimilating into American culture and the American way of life was no easy feat for me and I struggled at first, but I found ways to manage. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Finally, I extend my hesitant arm to pick up the pack of masa harina and proceed to pour it into the bowl. As I pour the masa harina, I cannot help but think about how much it resembles my journey to America. When I moved, I brought my Guatemalan heritage with me into the massive bowl that is the United States. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another person’s outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red.

Why is everything word count these days instead of page count? Instead, applicants will need to enter the essay into a text box that counts words and prevents entering anything beyond 650 words. It depends on how large or small your letters are. I average 240 handwritten words per college ruled sheet. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. Why do writers seem to obsess over word count and page count? There are instances when you’re given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. For example, “Write a paper four pages long.” If you get an assignment to write four pages, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is, “How many words are in four pages? ” If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. No one is successful one hundred percent of the time. When I was in school when I was younger, all assignments were page count. Can someone explain to me why so many people are obsessed with word count and page count? If you’re a writer, shouldn’t writing well be the most important thing? In 2011, that decision was taken away as the Common Application moved to a relatively short 500-word limit. With the August 2013 release of CA4 , the guidelines changed once again. CA4 set the limit at 650 words with a minimum of 250 words. And unlike earlier versions of the Common Application, the length limit is now enforced by the application form. No longer can applicants attach an essay that goes over the limit. Regardless of length, and even if yours is a transfer essay, the best writing will tell a compelling story, provide insight to your character and interests, and are written with crisp and engaging prose. Again, use the essay to narrate an engaging story. Make sure it highlights something you care about deeply, and be sure to provide a window into your interests or personality that isn't already obvious from the rest of your application. For years the Common Application had no length limit, and applicants and counselors frequently debated whether a tight 450-word essay was a wiser approach than a detailed 900-word piece. Let down your guard and tell your readers about a time you failed. They’ll find your struggle relatable, and they’ll be inspired by your story of how you overcame the failure and learned from it. Sometimes you’ve just got to write a blog post or flesh out a content publishing calendar. Unfortunately, that creative well can run dry, and writing prompts may not help. Here are some ways to come up with topics when you’re in a slump. Reflect on your MUN experience in essays and interviews. Model United Nations is the reason I got into Yale. I started doing MUN because it was a fun way to study history, but it also developed my communication skills and gave me the confidence to express myself. it’s like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. As I devoted more time to the activity, I gained leadership experience by winning awards, chairing committees, running conferences, and training my club. When I started applying to college, I was able to seek advice from people I’d met through MUN who were attending or had attended competitive colleges.

College Application Essay

College Application Essay Begin thinking about answers to the common application questions and review the pre-writing techniques. But what’s so wrong with having a wide range of interests? This is inherently not a bad, nay, it’s a good thing for a college applicant. This book gives good examples of narratives, but does not go into detail as to how to write a narrative. Doing so will force you to examine every word, thought and article of punctuation. Even if you are not able to reduce by 10%, making an honest attempt at it will make your essay better. Self-exploration can be fun, but don't procrastinate on the actual writing. You don't want to rush or be up against a tight deadline; it will affect your work. Submit it, and treat yourself to something nice â€" like your favorite film, a run, quality time with your dog or whatever it is that you enjoy. Don’t worry about the word count until you have developed a complete draft. Word and character counts can be paralyzing if you allow them to dictate your approach to an essay topic. Then, take a step back in order to gain perspective. Don’t use the word “I” to start sentences any more than is necessary. You don’t need to remind the reader at the start of each sentence. Application Essay

Application Essay So you don’t need to have great exotic vacations or heartbreaking stories of community service in some far off land â€" you just need to reveal your point of view about a topic. When you can show the reader a slice of your genuine self â€" you are on your way to a great college essay. The uniqueness of an essay stems not from some external experience, but your internal responses. A great college essay combines creativity, excellent writing, and honesty. It’s important that your essay be a solid reflection of you as a person and as a student, and that you follow the guidelines provided in terms of topic and word-count. A good college essay is one that stays with the reader after he or she finishes reading it, maybe even thinking about it later that day, or the next day. When possible, select a topic that engages you and is one you are interested in addressing. It is important that your voice comes through and that the reader feels he or she has had an opportunity to experience a more personal facet of your character and your unique perspective. See how the first relays information in apassivevoice, while the second paints anactivepicture? Feel free to start out by painting a vibrant picture of yourself too! Many college admissions counselors have said that the more unique your essay â€" the content and writing style â€" the more captivating it is to read. Vagueness isn’t a problem unique to admissions essays. It’s something all writers struggle with â€" including myself; I struggled with it while writing this very article. Avoid cliches at all cost and never write what you think someone wants to hear. When you are finished with the essay, read it out loud and carefully listen to the content, grammar, and pay attention to spelling or word glitches. It is well-written with college bound vocabulary and style, but easy to read and somewhat unassuming. Like great works of fiction, these essays clearly paint a picture in the reader’s mind. In addition to this, the schools that you’re applying to may have different prompts â€" which could mean having to write multiple essays. This is why we recommend sitting down and coming up with a few different topics to consider. No wonder people feel stressed out about their college essays! A great college essay gives the reader a glimpse of the person behind the page. Lots of counselors tell students to “tell a story only you can tell,” and I definitely agree with that. But sometimes students misinterpret this to mean â€" “tell me about a totally unique experience” â€" and they get totally stressed out because they don’t feel that they have any unique experiences. Telling a story “only you can tell” means that you tell the reader a story from your perspective. Don’t just write what you think the admissions office wants to hear. Very often they are inundated with essays that cater to “what they want to hear,” making such essays exactly what they don’t want to hear. It can be hard to choose what to talk about in your college essays. In other words, your college essay should give the reader a real sense of your unique personality, characteristics, and qualities. Whether you’re prompted to write about a formative experience, why you think you’d be a good fit for the university or about a person who has influenced you greatly, answer the question honestly. To the college essay admissions process I bring skills honed as a television writer, a screenwriter, and a journalist. Entering my ninth year, I have worked with nearly 400 bright, motivated, and exceptional applicants who each year are accepted to T10 colleges and universities. I love what I do and am immeasurably proud of every applicant I work with and their results. (noun, pl.) A completely masturbatory work of high school fiction, used by college admissions officials as psyops tests in order to evaluate your personality. These, on college applications, are better left blank, so long as your GPA, SAT, and other tests are in your advantage. Otherwise, sarcastic embellishment is usually required, in the form of a Hail Mary Pass.

Even if the phone makes no noise, the light from the screen is enough to catch someone’s attention. phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. best solution is to create cell phone usage rules that allow devices to be accessible without disturbing other students’ educational opportunities. guments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. Should a crisis occurs in the classroom, students should have their phones on hand to make a call. If a student has a child, he or she may need a phone in case of a medical emergency. If the student is on call for work, he or she will need access to a phone. The list of exception-worthy scenarios is endless. Consequently, essays all rely not only on the validity of the facts they communicate but also on the selection, critical evaluation, organisation, and presentation of these facts. What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example

What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example First of all, you’ll need a “hook” to open your essay. This hook should entice the reader by hinting at the essay’s theme in a way that makes the reader want to read more. The hook can be funny, witty, or a simple hypothesis. Whatever style you choose, be sure it coincides with the overall theme of your essay. We talked about prioritizing extra-curricular activities, such as putting the things you care about most and have the most involvement with, first. While an application may have eight, 10 or 30 lines for involvement, busy admission officers who speed read this section may only get to third on the list. Make them want to keep learning about you by telling them clearly and thoroughly what’s most important to you. The essay is the place to make a great first impression on the reader. For some essay projects, evaluating the audience is important, but for others, it’s best to follow the general writing strategies you see in mainstream writing, periodicals, and professional literature. You want to use any details that will help the reader identify the topic and the scope of the essay. Above all, look for words or phrases that can be cut out of your essay to leave just the very best of what you have to say. When you’re nearing the end of your essay, it’s time to put the finishing touches on it with a separate closing paragraph. My friend Alex has a second-degree black belt in judo. She was thinking about doing an essay on her beloved Calvin and Hobbes. Varying your word choices keeps your copy fresh and holds the reader’s attention. My third essay draft started with the idea “I’m not afraid to speak up. I refuse to stay silent.” I brainstormed how I came to have this character trait and intersections of it with my Asian-American identity. I ultimately told the story of slam poetry night at Governor’s School, the first time that I really pushed myself out of my comfort zone to speak about a racial issue. My final draft is multifaceted, showing my personal growth in context of the frustration and empowerment rooted in my Asian-American identity. You want to use focused writing with a consistent tone and diction throughout the essay. This part of an essay is the first presentation of your ideas. There are a number of elements you want to include in your introduction to encourage the reader to continue reading. It combined parts of my initial drafts into something completely new. Other topics that I ultimately rejected for my Common App essay actually went to be the focal point of other essays. There were numerous times when I opened up a Google doc and stared at a blank screen, only to inevitably get distracted by Facebook and not get anything accomplished. The conclusion is where you bring together all of the elements you previously mentioned in the other sections. No, you don’t have to mention each one explicitly, but your conclusion should cover most of what you addressed in your essay, and make a good clean end to your narrative path. In a dramatic and powerful conclusion is where you want to spell out, in a bold manner, any ideas you’ve been hinting at throughout the essay. ” From there, I started cultivating this list of essay topics, character traits, experiences, and even some random sentences that I ended up using in my final essay. Don’t stress out if you don’t really have a hook.

Write A College Essay So even if all the revising and nitpicking on the college essay may not help your kid get into college, it will almost certainly make him or her a better writer. of students who completed applications with Ivy Coach earned admission to their first college choice. Check out this post on Advice on College Essays or this one on College Essay Pointers. And feel free to share an example of an idea for a topic on a college essay that you’re considering using but aren’t sure how to go about it. We can help you hone in on exactly what you should be saying in your college essay to get the attention of college admissions counselors in a good way. If a university finds out you lied on an application or essay you will get rejected, almost guaranteed. Plagiarism is always wrong, and schools are getting better at detecting it. The admissions committee is looking to learn about youâ€"your achievements, your obstacles, your goals, your passions, your personality, your values, and your character. Notice any lines that might sound confusing to someone who doesn’t know you and rewrite them. Enlist a friend or family member to read over it, too. Maybe not, but I loved the rules, the structure, and the big questions that surrounded organizing a government. I thought about these things constantlyâ€"while brushing my teeth, doing chores, and driving to school. Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. It always helps to have someone else give you their feedback before your essay lands in the inboxes of admissions counselors. To get the ball rolling on writing your essay, start with something a bit easierâ€"make a list of what matters to you. Do not allow your essays to descend into an impenetrable bulk of buzzwords and banality. If you are asked to write about an influential person, the college wants to know his or her influence on you. Whatever topic you choose to center your essay around, make sure you shine through. The essay can â€" and should â€" help kids “come alive” for admissions officers, he says, and be more than a GPA and SAT score. You’ve finished writing your essay, and you want to immediately submit it and be done with it. Before you check that box, read over what you wrote, and read over it slowly. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. I’d become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see “literature” as anything more than mere stories. If you’re not a good writer and don’t have a huge vocabulary, don’t use fancy words. Your ideas can be profound and can show deep insight into your character, even if they are told in simple, unadorned phrases. That said, you should absolutely get someone to edit for typos and grammar. Don’t just farm it out â€" learn from those writing lessons and use the essay to become more confident in your own voice. This is best described in How to Write a Great Statement of Purpose, by Vince Gotera of the University of Northern Iowa, which was my guide to writing my essays when I applied to graduate school. College admissions officers comb through hundreds of essays a year, so you have just a few minutes to catch their attention. Open with an anecdote (If it’s funny, even better.) that will hook them in the beginning and keep them reading until the end. Or go for their heart â€" trying to move an admission officer with emotion isn’t a bad idea, either. Writing the college essay is the most stressful â€" and arguably, the most important â€" part of the application process. This is similar to the on-the-spot assessments we as teachers often give our students to assess their comprehension of a particular unit. Change up the questions and allow the students to produce their work directly in front of you. This would ensure that the words were in fact their own. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didn’t expect to find it in AP Lit. Don’t worry about being someone else’s idea of a “good writer.” If you’re not funny, it’s not the time to be funny.

College Essay

College Essay Don’t just write about what you’re comfortable with, but don’t take a risk that might swallow the essay whole. The best way to approach the admissions essay is to see it as a first conversation. Anyone can tell a story, but only a true storyteller can pull a captivating narrative out of the most mundane parts of life. A storyteller is equal parts collector and sharer, observer and raconteur. While the essay is a valuable tool that we use to understand you better, it is rarely if ever a “make or break” component of your application. While we still have a few more days until the official beginning of fall, around here it feels a lot like the season has already begun. If you include Step Three in your essay, you will reveal how you are able to take a life lesson beyond how it affected you, as well as your ability to think critically and reflectively. “I never saw a phenomenal essay suddenly make up for everything” Heaton agreed. You can read diverse opinions from our Board of Contributors and other writers on the Opinion front page, on Twitter @USATOpinion and in our daily Opinion newsletter. To submit a letter, comment or column, check oursubmission guidelines. Some college traditions are no longer applicable in today’s society. Let’s come up with a new solution that allows all children fair access to academic institutions. As the post mentions, your essay should supplement the other parts of your application to help us understand you better. That said, you don’t have to include anything about yourself that you don’t feel comfortable sharing. As a senior, most of the accomplishments that will make up the bulk of your application â€" academic performance, test scores, and extracurricular involvement â€" are said and done. In a sense, the only part of the application over which you have complete control right now is the essay. An admissions essay is not an opening statement in a debate tournament, nor is it a litany of personal accomplishments. Is there a specific place to write the essay and is there a prompt, the common app doesn’t have a location to attach a personal essay. Your essay should help to give better, deeper insight into you as a person. To make a great impression, what would you talk about? What about yourself would you be willing to share honestly? What topics spark your interests, your passions? What kind of language are you most comfortable using? And most importantly, what do you want to know about your interlocutor? Where can there be space in the conversation not only for your own curiosity, but also for the curiosity of the other speaker? Framing your essay around this setup will help you make a strong first impression, and one that is organic, personal, and authentic. And let’s keep the personal in the essay by not allowing third parties to ghostwrite our children’s future. Students are essentially paying a third party to ghost-write their story in an essay which is supposed to be a culmination of their skill set, not a professional’s. This may be acceptable for athletes and movie stars who pay for assistance with their memoirs, but should not be commonplace when competing for collegiate acceptance. You can write conversationally, but the grammar and spelling still need to be correct. And don’t solely rely on your computer’s spell-checker. A storyteller absorbs the sensations and the happenings of life, and then shapes them into narrative objects of various sizesâ€"here a tall-tale, there a parable, here a quip and there an epic. A storyteller sizes up an audience and bends her/his story to the attentions of those present. A storyteller never tells the same story the same way. Or better yet, a storyteller never tells the same story.

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts Nice, confident kids who've worked hard don't ask us this question. So don't let the pressure of college admissions influence you to lie on your college application. Instantly, my mind transports me back a few summers before, when I tapped my own heels to traditional music in Spain. I am reminded of my thirst to travel, to explore new cultures utterly different from my familiar home in Modesto, California. I have experienced study abroad in Spain, visited my father’s hometown in China five times, and traveled to many other places such as Paris. As a result, I have developed a restlessness inside me, a need to move on from four years in the same high school, to take advantage of diverse opportunities whenever possible, and to meet interesting people. This is a college essay that worked for Cornell University. I select my first prey arbitrarily, and as I raise my hand up to eye level, I closely examine this chosen one. A miniature Flamenco dancer stares back at me from the confines of the 3-D rectangular magnet, half popping out as if willing herself to come to life. An admissions officer knows the important facts. If there was a slight dip in your grades second semester of your junior year, colleges can now put that situation in context. You don’t need an entire essay to explain it to them. These selections represent just a few examples of essays we found impressive and helpful during the past admissions cycle. The essays can be the most important components of your application. I reach in and let my fingers trail around the surfaces of each object. I lived on a college campus with 200 students and studied a topic. On the first day of class, our teacher set a box on the table and poured water into the top, and nothing came out. Then, he poured more water in, and everything slowly came out. This is a college essay that worked for University of Pennsylvania . I attended the SPK Program, a five-week enrichment program with New Jersey’s best and brightest students. This is a college essay that worked for Duke University. This is a college essay that worked for Harvard University. You don't need an admission to Princeton or NYU or UCLA badly enough to lie. If you've made mistakes, be mature enough to own up to them. The problem with that question isn't that the answer should be obvious. It's a stupid question because lying to your colleges is a stupid thing to do. We were told to figure out what had happened with no phones or textbooks, just our brains. We worked together to discover in the box was a siphon, similar to what is used to pump gas. We spent the next weeks building solar ovens, studying the dynamic of paper planes, diving into the content of the speed of light and space vacuums, among other things. We did this with no textbooks, flashcards, or information to memorize. And most students aren't posing the question hypothetically. They're asking because they're considering telling the lie. Ethan Sawyer, the College Essay Guy, has been helping students tell their stories for more than ten years. He is a graduate of Northwestern University, received an MFA from UC Irvine, and received two counseling certifications, one from UC Irvine and another from the Interchange Counseling Institute.

How To Finish A College

How To Finish A College In addition, you are sharing something about yourself that is not anywhere else in your application. Finding a cure for cancer, saving the whales singlehandedly, or traveling abroad to build homes for orphans does not automatically make a great essay. Once you’ve proofread and edited the essay till you’re sick of it, let a few people you trust look over it. If they’re willing, get one of your English teachers to read it. These people will point out things you never would have noticed on your own. John Hopkins University has a page full of essays that worked; one in particular, entitled“Breaking Into Cars”, showcases what the writer learned from his experiences well. I know this sounds absurdly simple, but it really does make a difference to be as relaxed as possible when you sit down to write. The essay is one of the few things that you’ve got complete control over in the application process, especially by the time you’re in your senior year. The college application process is stressful, and the essay can seem like an insurmountable hurdle. Once you have a revised draft of your college essay, call in your friends and family to take a look. Have them give you comments and encourage them to be honest. Admissions officers can have a sense of humor too, and, when used appropriately, humor can make you stand out. However, don't make being funny one of your top goals in your college essay. Be thoughtful in both your topic choice and the tone of your writing. It’s all about the delivery, the reflection, the conversational tone, showing not telling that will make for a winning essay. Combining your larger reasons with the specific details paints a clear picture of why this is the right college for you. Use the details to ground the bigger-picture aspects of your story. For instance, if you’re applying to Cornell’s School of Hotel Management, you might describe how you’ve been collecting hotel brochures since you were a child in the hope of one day opening your own. That, combined with your desire to be on a large, rural campus with deep ties to the surrounding town â€" and work every job possible in a student run hotel â€" made you know Cornell was the school for you. Simply recanting facts will not distinguish you from other candidates with equal class rank, grades and test scores. Making your scholarly endeavors personal will pique curiosity and demonstrate your potential to contribute to an academic community. If you can make the reader laugh, say “I get that” or “me too”, you are on your way to a strong application. Colleges look for students who have dealt with adversity, have overcome challenges and continue to grow from their experience. Admitting shortcomings is a sign of maturity and intelligence, so there is no need to portray yourself as a superhero; they will see through it. Focus on ways you have internalized and personalized academic research and demonstrate how this will enhance the university’s academic community. Writing about hiking the Appalachian Trail or obsessively reading “To Kill A Mocking Bird” is noble but not memorable. This is the point in your life where you pour the largest amount of bullshit you can muster into a paper. An essay where highschoolers have to boast about how awesome they are in order to get into the colleges they want. The harder they boast the more likely they'll get accepted. Connecticut College admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to all students at the college. Choose the prompt that comes closest to something you’d like to write about. The purpose of the prompt is to help you reflect on something that matters to you. Your application will be full of information that illuminates dimensions of you and your abilities, but only the essay gives you a vehicle to speak, in your own voice, about something personally significant. Choose something you care about and it will flow more naturally. Even though most colleges require you to submit SAT or ACT scores with your application, research shows they are not the best predictors of your ability to thrive in college. Excluding then these quantitative indicators, what do you think SDSU and the Weber Honors College should look for in applicants and why? Be specific when answering and make sure you discuss how your response indicates that you are a good fit for the Weber Honors College's mission, values, and requirements. This essay is about your relationship with the school, not solely the school itself. In fact, it’s really more about you than the college â€" how and why you will thrive there. To that end, use the space to explore why you’re a mutual fit. It can be especially helpful to use a story or anecdote (just not, “I’ve had a Yale sweatshirt since I was 10”).

The Right Way To Write About Tragedy In College Application Essays

The Right Way To Write About Tragedy In College Application Essays The most important moment occurred during the night’s luminaria ceremony, during which cancer patients of the past and present were commemorated. Our whole team gathered around, and I asked people to share how they have been affected by cancer. The Sonora Eagles were my means for dealing with the death of my loved ones to cancer. I strive to become fluent in Spanish; traveling the world is a dream of mine. Recently, I have discovered that I really like to code; I’m sure in the coming years I will explore things I didn’t know I was interested in. To a casual onlooker, this question may appear inconsequential in its hypothetical nature, but as they say; you are what you eat. I believe my purpose as a student is to encourage others to become active community members and motivate them to reach new heights. Four Essay Samples From Compass Release - Marcus Buckingham

<h1>Four Essay Samples From Compass Release - Marcus Buckingham</h1><p>The Compass Release: Four Essay Samples by Marcus Buckingham is an amazing paper objective setting guide. Nonetheless, it has a few imperfections that I accept take away from its capacity to carry out its responsibility. A portion of these issues are not as genuine as others and I'll go over them in this article.</p><p></p><p>The first imperfection I'll make reference to is the utilization of an inward compass to help direct your core interest. The issue with this idea is that it doesn't address the main problem, which is whether you have distinguished your actual qualities and shortcomings rather than simply concentrating on a misguided feeling of what the creator calls 'GPS' capacities. This compass idea won't permit you to develop as an individual and become fruitful in life.</p><p></p><p>The second imperfection is the point at which the creator states objectives resemble a compass discharged from a compass. We as a whole realize that objectives aren't so basic and the facts confirm that not all individuals will distinguish their actual qualities and shortcomings. Shockingly, the creator never clarifies why there are individuals who will experience difficulty in any event, taking a gander at their shortcomings and how to stop this. Without this issue tended to, the compass idea won't be effective.</p><p></p><p>The third blemish I'll discuss is the subjects of the exposition tests spread. The creator makes reference to five subjects and I don't know why they are sorted along these lines. Much of the time, the points I looked into were not quite certain, occasionally being more summed up than everything else. For instance, one article I read discussed somebody's excursion to 'own what they put stock in,' while another article I read discussed an individual's life being transformed.</p><p>&l t;/p><p>As I expressed previously, this is a fundamental guide, however you have to understand the material might be excessively convoluted for a great many people to comprehend and apply it in their lives. Some will discover it excessively broad or excessively explicit, contingent upon their requirements. The significant thing to remember is that these ideas are vital on the off chance that you need to get fruitful. Without them, you'll just wind up baffled and confused.</p><p></p><p>The last defect I'll make reference to is the way that the four objectives referenced are not even about objectives. The creator discusses building up a 'self discipline' and how that can be applied so as to accomplish objectives. In spite of the fact that this article addresses this idea, the article talks about progressively about 'individual qualities.' Again, there was a ton of conventional and summed up material in this article, making it a total misuse of time.< ;/p><p></p><p>The Compass Release: Four Essay Samples: This audit didn't broadly expound on the exposition tests remembered for this book. Be that as it may, I will talk about them quickly and will be returning to them later. The primary paper test is named 'Question: Who is your rock?'</p><p></p><p>It talks about the fundamental idea of the book and how this is very much like a definitive life theory. This might be an incredible title for the primary exposition test, however when you consider different points talked about, it might be a misuse of time.</p>

A Comparison of Tullus Hostilius and L. Tarquinius Superbus - Literature Essay Samples

Livy’s Rise of Rome is a history of Rome’s early years, bringing to the modern reader a glimpse of the civilization’s vast mythology. Its stories are populated with a rich cast of mystical kings, heroic champions, and malicious villains, who come together to form a vivid, dynamic image of Rome’s creation. Of these characters, two of the most intriguing are Tullus Hostilius and L. Tarquinius Superbus, a pair of kings who ruled approximately a century apart. Despite their similarities, Livy portrays Tullus Hostilius in a far more positive light than L. Tarquinius Superbus, citing both his honourable approach to war and his benevolent style of governance. Tullus and Tarquin are, above all, very similar characters. Both are very combative figures, either leading Rome into battle or using violence for personal gain. This is in stark contrast to their respective predecessors Numa Pompilius before Tullus, and Servius Tullius before Tarquin both of whom were known for their peaceful regimes. The two also share the same influences behind their warlike actions: their famous ancestors, his grandfather in Tullus’ case and his father in Tarquin’ case. As Livy says, â€Å"[Tullus’] mettlesome nature was the product of youth, strength, and awareness of his grandfather’s prowess,† (I.22) while for Tarquin the entire reason why he seized power was because he felt his father’s blood gave him the right. Finally, both of them did much to expand Rome’s influence, with Tullus uniting the kingdom with Alba, and Tarquin building new colonies to house the plebeians, as well as bringing all the Latin states u nder his control. Despite these parallels between the two characters, at heart they are very different men: Tullus embodies honourable Roman values, and while he may not be perfect, he is certainly more of a leader than the treacherous, cowardly Tarquin. This is first evident in their motivations: while Tullus fights for the glory of Rome, Tarquin does so for his own gain. When Tullus ascends to the throne, the reason why he seeks out opportunities for Rome to wage war is because he thinks the state is becoming â€Å"weak from inaction† (I.22) under Numa Pompilius’ reign. Tarquin, on the other hand, â€Å"[makes] and [unmakes] war, peace, treaties, and alliances as he [pleases],† (I.49) purely at whim, and with no deeper motivation to improve Rome’s status. Tullus’ superiority as a ruler is also evident in his actual approach to conflict: he fights with honour and discipline, whereas Tarquin uses treachery and deception. The only time Tullus’ actions are ever described as deceptive is when he tricks the city of Alba into declaring war on Rome yet even this is for the kingdom’s benefit, as he does it to lay the blame for the war on Alba, and get the gods on Rome’s side (I.22). Furthermore, not only does Tullus try to be honourable himself, he also doesn’t support treachery among his allies: notably, after Mettius retreats during the battle against Fidenae and Veii, Tullus has him physically split in half, just as his loyalties were during the battle (I.28). In contrast, whenever Tarquin comes into conflict with someone, he is either too cowardly or too weak to face them head-on, and thus resorts to traps and deception. For instance, when Turnus Herdonius offends him during a meeting of the Latin heads of state, Tarquin frames him for plotting to kill everyone present, and has him executed when Tullus does the same to Mettius, at least he has a valid reason (I.51). On another occasion, when Tarquin was attempting to ta ke the city of Gabii by force, he â€Å"could not carry on a successful siege after being repulsed from the walls, [and] fell back on a wholly un-Roman stratagem, deceit and treachery† (I.53), having his son Sextus infiltrate the city and gradually kill off its leaders. Finally, Tullus follows the Roman tradition of being kind to defeated enemies, while Tarquin relies on fear. Even after executing Mettius and demolishing his city, Alba, Tullus invites all of the now-homeless Albans to live in Rome, giving them citizenship, extending the city to accommodate them, adding their noble families to the Senate, establishing new military units for them (I.30). Tarquin, on the other hand, tries to cow his enemies into submission, ranging from his own people to hostile Latin states. Another aspect of the two kings that differentiates them is their style of governance outside of the military: while both undertook great building projects and left an impact on the city after they left it, that impact is far more positive for Tullus than for Tarquin. In terms of construction, the main difference is their motivation Tullus’ projects are mainly for the benefit of the Alban people moving into Rome, including extensions of the city around the Caelian Hill to house them, and the Curia Hostilia to accommodate the enlarged Senate (I.30). As for Tarquin, while his Temple of Jupiter may be grander and more ambitious, his entire reason for building it is personal glory, to the point where his funds are â€Å"scarcely enough to pay for the cost of the foundation† (I.55), and he doesn’t even have enough left to pay for labourers. This leads to his use of plebeian conscription, essentially using his own citizens as slave labour to build edifices to himself c ertainly not the mark of a selfless leader. Aside from construction, Tullus was also superior in his relationship with his subjects, who trust him a lot more than they do Tarquin. For instance, after Horatius, the hero who saved Rome from Alba, commits the crime of killing his sister, the people immediately bring him before Tullus, trusting in the judgement of their king on how to handle the situation (I.26). When the Alban army retreats during the battle against Fidenae, such is the trust that the Roman soldiers have in their king that they still do not lose hope, â€Å"[thinking] it [is] all part of Tullus’ plan, and so [fight] all the harder† (I.27). Even when Tullus, driven mad by sickness, becomes extremely religious and superstitious, â€Å"the people [begin] to follow his lead as well† (I.31). Tarquin and the Roman people have no such bond he knows that they bear no affection towards him, to the extent that he feels the need to surround himself with an ar med escort at all times (I.49). In return, Tarquin shows the people no trust or respect either: he sets up a charade of a law court with himself as the sole judge, doling out punishments to â€Å"execute, exile, and fine not just those he suspected or disliked, but those from whom he wanted nothing but their money† (I.49). He marries his daughter to the Latin king Octavius Mamilius of Tusculum, to protect his throne against his own people through foreign alliances (I.49). And even after using the plebeians as slave labour to build his temple, he has the nerve to send many of them off to the colonies of Signia and Circeii, feeling their â€Å"large numbers to be a burden on the city† (I.56). It is clear that Tullus Hostilius is a superior leader to L. Tarquinius Superbus, despite whatever similarities they may share. Yet, in the end, no matter how noble Tullus was in battle or how well he treated his people, it was still he who died of the gods’ wrath, struck down by Jove’s thunderbolt. And as for Tarquin, he died in exile and disgrace, his dynasty overthrown and his kingdom overtaken. The two men, so different in life, were equal in death.
